Saqueo (looting) reflects on extractivism from a Latin American perspective. It is a metaphor for land tear up, which is directly related to colonialism and capitalism. Mexico has been seriously affected by resource extraction. First by the colonizers, who began a drawn-out process of pilfering its gold and silver. Later, by the hacendados, large landholders, and finally by the owners of various industries. This century has been marked by excessive natural and mineral extraction carried out by multinational companies that often operate without social license causing serious social and environmental problems. This piece invites the audience to reflect on concepts such as looting, plundering, accumulation and concentration of wealth and exposes how if we continue to voraciously tear off resources from the Earth there will soon be nothing left. It is a call to understand that the accelerating extraction of natural and mineral resources will eventually strip down regions, nations, and finally, the entire world.
The audience was invited to extract gold and collect it inside small cristal jars creating an installation.
